TEDx

Introduction: TEDx is an independent TED-like event hosted here in our school wherein we invite speakers to come talk about their passions and inspirations in life. There were different roles to be a part of making TEDx, and interviews had to be done to see if you were qualified for the position you applied for. I was successfully able to get the role of the admissions director and was in charge of making the application form, sending them out, collecting as much people as possible (100 max), confirming emails, and on the day making sure those who came were on the list.

L.O.'s:

  • LO2 - A great challenge was undertaking by simply taking part of this TEDx event. I've never been in charge of a team (I had to recruit my own admissions team) and wasn't used to giving out orders. This experience definitely put me out of my comfort zone as I had to instruct people what to do and how to do it.

  • LO3 - As the year progressed, more and more pressure was added to my role. Towards the end of the year, I had to send out the application form to the public and ensure that I get enough attendees otherwise the event would be put to waste. My admissions team and I had to make creative proposals and suggestions on how to spread the word about TEDxBritishSchoolManila. Successfully, we were able to get around 80 attendees at the end.

  • LO4 - Although the first few months weren't as important for my role, I still attended meetings regularly to update myself on our progression. I've shown commitment for the event and was able to plan ahead of time due to this.

  • LO5 - I had to communicate with different heads such as the marketing head and the designer, as they had to help me promote the event to be able to attract as much people as possible into the event. As I had my own admissions team, I had to learn how to be a good leader and communicate with them properly. On the day of the event, I had to ensure my team were under control and not too stressed out. I had to be prepared to readily assist any member of my team.

  • LO7 - I had to consider the ethics of choices and actions on both the application form and during the day of the event. I had to ensure that questions on the form would not invade people's privacy. Moreover, on the event day, I had to ensure that my actions and approach toward these guests were respectful. I also helped out in a psychology test during the intervals and had to ensure that participants answer the form of consent before taking part of the experiment.

In TEDx today, we talked about the logo, food, sponsors and speakers. Alexis, the designer, had made a sketch of a train with the title “TEDxpress”, as our theme is about expressing yourself. However, we do not own this title, therefore we do not have permission to use this. The title “Xpress yourself” was suggested in replacement, and we, as a group, thought it was better as we wouldn't need to worry about the licensing. As for food, we are still looking for sponsors who are willing to serve their food during the event. The sponsorship manager was still looking for big sponsors and we all contributed on suggesting different companies. Lastly, we all were very excited whom to invite as speakers that our room eventually got really loud. In the end, we said that it was better to focus on a topic first before inviting speakers, so that we stick to a certain theme rather than inviting random speakers who have very different things to say. At the end of the day, most things were settled and we all knew what we had to research in preparation for our next meeting.

We discussed about the logo and website ideas in TEDx today. The editors worked on fixing the image of the logo on the laptop and the rest were there to give suggestions about how TEDx would look like on the day of the event. Overall, this session was quite chill as there wasn’t much discussion, just mostly on the logo and design.

We actually have a TEDx Google drive called ‘minutes’ where we write all the things we’ve done per session. New things get uploaded there weekly, with updates pertaintng the day's discussion. The link will be the button down below:

We were deciding on creating our own brand name called Speak instead of running TEDx because we haven’t gotten permission to run a “TEDx” yet. This would mean that we can be more open to ideas as Speak would be our own branding, but then it would be more difficult to get sponsors than TEDx because TEDx is a better known name.
