BAYANIHAN
Introduction: A project led by 4 students (including me) as a service part of CAS. We decided to do ours on the Pencil Drive, wherein we buy stationery supplies for the less-fortunate children to enable them to school and receive education.

L.O.'s:
-
LO4 - This was a long project as we had to plan on what we were going to do (Pencil Drive) and we had to put up stalls during school events to sell food and earn profit to buy stationery. Moreover, we had to look for sponsors to donate even more supplies. This shows our commitment and perseverance to try to make the most of what we can do and provide as much as we can for these children.
-
LO5 - As a group of 4, we all worked collaboratively and contributed to ideas on what supplied we would buy and how we would distribute them. We also listened to each person's proposal on how they think the 3 days visiting the school should be spent doing. We all had different roles that we were in charge of so that our 3 days spent in the school would be as productive as possible, and if anyone was struggling with the role given, we would all lend a hand and support each other.
-
LO6 - Finding a project to do as our CAS service made us research on different issues in the Philippines today. We found that education was a major issue and thought that if we could help the children receive education today, it would benefit not only themselves but also the economy of the Philippines in the future as more of them would have the opportunity to work. From here, we became aware of what we had to do to be able to give these children the best chance of receiving enough education, especially at their young age.
-
LO7 - We had to recognize the issue of language barriers as some of us aren't necessarily fluent in Filipino. We also had to be aware of what we need to know in order to make an ethical decision when we are in the school and interacting with the people there as their culture may be different to ours and we would need to acknowledge and reflect on the different cultural/ethical beliefs.

We discussed about fund raising ideas such as bake sales in stalls during bonfire night and getting some teachers to do “no shave November”. Moreover, we thought that the boys in our group would shave or dye their hair to earn money for charity. “Pay for pranks” was also an idea made by Alex. We discussed that Zaki will be in charge of talking to the NGO of ‘real life foundation’ where they help teaching kids and sponsoring college kids because our focus is education in our community. Marga and I will be in charge of planning the bake sale on bonfire night; Zaki and Alex will be looking into families that help sponsor and support the kids.

As bonfire night is coming up very soon, we are going to focus on how we are going to sell our products in this event. Our group thought of new products to sell for our bake sale, including hot chocolate, juice and more refreshing beverages. Furthermore, we started thinking about where we are going to get these products, their costs, and how we are going to successfully make a profit. We did this by talking about the pricing of our product and the location of our stall. We also thought about naming our stall, and we thought of “In love with the Coco”.

Bonfire night was a success as we were able to sold chocolate milk, chips, ring-pops, and brownies to people. Our profit was over 4.5k php, which I think is quite good considering that this was our first time selling. We were able to coordinate to each other well on shifts for the stall and we had great teamwork helping each other out and inviting others to our stall. Another point I thought was really good was that we placed free brownie for people to try, because then many people tasted it and ended up buying a piece. Furthermore, towards the end of the event, we lowered the price to almost half to just get rid of the last few goods we had left. Even though not all of our goods were sold, we were still able to sell a decent amount during Bonfire Night, which was great fun.

Here’s a summary of our plan so far:
For this year's CAS week, our group is doing the pencil drive, where we will donate stationery to local schools and offices that need them for their education or work. We hope that by the end of CAS week, we will provide an efficient amount of supplies from not only us but from as many people as possible. We have already listed the supplies we plan to collect and who we are going to reach out to in order to get these supplies. We plan to go to Payatas to personally hand out the supplies during the 3 days of CAS. At the moment, we are still trying to get monetary donations from other sponsors and are trying to get extra-donated supplies from school and offices.

For our Bayanihan group, we planned our full 3-day schedule together for our CAS week. We discussed about what activities we wanted to do for the kids and what kind of stationary and snacks we are going to buy for them. We did our risk assessments and discussed that we are riding one of the member’s car together as our transportation to the place.
